Video description:We propose an end-to-end solution for presenting movie quality animated graphics to the user while still allowing the sense of presence afforded by free viewpoint head motion. By transforming offline rendered movie content into a novel immersive representation, we display the content in real-time according to the tracked head pose. For each frame, we generate a set of cubemap images per frame (colors and depths) using a sparse set of of cameras placed in the vicinity of the potential viewer locations.
The cameras are placed with an optimization process so that the rendered data maximise coverage with minimum redundancy, depending on the lighting environment complexity. We compress the colors and depths separately, introducing an integrated spatial and temporal scheme tailored to high performance on GPUs for Virtual Reality applications. We detail a real-time rendering algorithm using multi-view ray casting and view dependent decompression. Compression rates of 150:1 and greater are demonstrated with quantitative analysis of image reconstruction quality and performance. So it looks like they will be using this for Star Wars and other Disney VR cinematic experiences. Looks like some really cool tech, and I hope other studios will come up with similar solutions.

They'll most likely seperate the interactive stuff from the static stuff, streaming the 'static level' from a server, and calculating the interactive stuff locally on your device. The 'static level' could include a point cloud (what is used heavily in AR as well), giving the locally calculated stuff points of orientation. It would also kinda eliminate the technical differences between AR and VR, meaning that AR is just VR but with a pointcloud based on reality and not a pre-rendered CG environment.
For a long time, the idea of sending unmanned space probes through the depths of to distant stars has been theoretical. Recent research on new concepts like the propose accelerating miniaturised space probes by means of powerful lasers. Slowing them down again seems more challenging, since they cannot be fitted with braking systems for weight reasons. However, according to Professor Claudius Gros from the Institute for Theoretical Physics at Goethe University Frankfurt, it would be possible to decelerate at least comparatively slow space probes with the help of magnetic sails.'
Slow would mean, in this case, a travel velocity of 1,000 kilometres per second, which is only 0.3 percent of the speed of light, but nevertheless about 50 times faster than the Voyager spacecraft,' explains Gros. According to his calculations, what is needed is a magnetic sail in order to transfer the spacecraft's momentum to the gaseous interstellar medium. The sail consists of a large, superconducting loop with a diameter of about 50 kilometres. A lossless current induced in this loop then creates a. The ionised hydrogen in the is then reflected off the 's magnetic field, slowing it down gradually. This concept works, as Gros was able to show, despite the extremely low particle density of interstellar space (0.005 to 0.1 particles per cubic centimetre).Gros' research shows that magnetic sails can decelerate 'slow' spacecraft weighing up to 1,500 kilograms.
However, the journey would take historical periods of time—for example, a trip to the TRAPPIST-1 system of seven known planets would take about 12,000 years. Slower cruising probes the size of a car could be accelerated by the same laser, which, according to current planning, would make it possible to send high-speed probes weighing just a few grams to Alpha Centauri.Missions to that would take thousands of years are out of the question for exploratory missions. But the situation is quite different in cases where cruising time is irrelevant, such as missions that open up alternative possibilities for terrestrial life. Gros proposed such missions in 2016 under the name of 'The Genesis Project,' which would carry single-celled organisms, either as deep-frozen spores or encoded in a miniaturised gene laboratory. For a Genesis probe, it is not the time of arrival which is important, but the ability to decelerate and then orbit the target planet.
'.Target Planet.' ???Target Planet.' Ain't this the hokey script over used, reused and abused ad nauseum by umpteen comic books, mediocre fiction and ridicule worthy movies and cartoons?
I dunno, but any BEM/LGM so&so 'targeted' us with such flaming irresponsibility? If they ain't extinct by time we reach them?
They will be soon after! This mass delusion that anyone has the right, the self-absorbed sense of entitlement. Have the psychotic ability to rationalize any moral justification for such an act of biological genocide? Is mind boggling!
